As Summer comes to an end with fall right around the bend, your family is caught up in a whirlwind of back to school prep, backyard pizza parties, and planning ahead for cooler weather. Amidst all the commotion, it’s more than likely that you and your loved ones will be too caught up in the tumult of day-to-day life to step back and enjoy each other’s presence. While there’s no harm in keeping yourself busy and active, setting aside time to unplug and relax with your family is key to leading a healthy lifestyle. This may seem easier said than done; sometimes we all need some inspiration for kicking back and taking some much needed screen-free time. Luckily, we’ve put down a few of the many ways in which you and your family can put down the phones, practice gratitude, and enjoy the last days of summer with those that matter most.

        Volunteer

Taking the time to help others not only brings families together, but spreads joy to those around you. Sign your family up to help out at an animal shelter, food bank, or senior care home for an afternoon and see firsthand how even a few hours of volunteer work can make a difference in your life and your community.

        Baking

Spending an afternoon in the kitchen whipping up some treats is a great way to bond while also learning something new. Have every family member choose a new baking recipe to try each day of the week for one week. You can even host an at home baking competition. Pull off the table covers and have your family vote on the goods, with the yummiest treat winning a fun prize.

        The Wonders of Nature

The great outdoors is the perfect place to unplug and recharge. No matter if you’re taking a full camping trip or just taking an afternoon hike on a local trail, getting some fresh air is the simplest way for you and your family to unwind without a screen in sight. Be sure to put on your cushion and pillow covers before you leave and you’re ready for an outdoor adventure.

        Game Nights

There’s nothing like some healthy competition to keep everyone entertained on an unplugged evening. It’s time to break out the Monopoly, Clue, and Trivial Pursuit and see which member of your family is the ultimate board game champion.

        Family Tree

Get back to your roots by sitting down with your loved ones and mapping out your family tree. Take it a step further by gathering up some craft supplies and start a scrapbook detailing your family history.

        Vacation Planning

Everybody loves to dream about their next getaway, be that a beach escape or exploring the big city. Channel your inner travel agent and plan your next jet-set adventure, from your hotel stay to your must-do sights. Your family can get creative with it and create a moodboard with all of your bucket list vacays.

        DIY Projects

There’s always something that needs to be done around the house, and there’s no easier way to get it all done than getting the whole family involved. Each member of the family can work on one project, be it furniture painting or backyard building. Once everyone is done, you can celebrate with some dessert in your new and improved home.

        Day Trips

A change of scenery is always refreshing after spending so much time at home. Pack up the family and take a drive to the most interesting spots in your state. This could mean anything from a national park to a historic landmark, or even just a trip through the most scenic or historic neighborhoods in your area.

        End of Summer Cleaning

No one wants to start a new season with a messy home. Encourage the family to pitch in and give your home a deep clean, from floorboards to ceiling. Make it fun by blasting some tunes and enjoying some snacks while you tidy up. One day of deep cleaning means weeks of relaxing in a clean, clutter-free home that you and your family will be grateful for.

        Drop Everything and Read

Reading is the essential unplugged activity. Hit up your local library or mom and pop bookstore and have the whole family stock up on some good reads. As the sun sets, settle in with your new books and enjoy your literary escape, no phone needed.
